About The Founder
I am a first generation immigrant and was inspired by my parents who are also immigrants to create Immigstation. My family moved to Canada when I was two years old. As I was growing up, I saw my parents struggling with a lot of things. I now realize that it was just a lack of understanding of Canadian culture and government systems. For example, a few weeks before moving to Canada, my parents tried searching for a rental apartment online. But the websites they searched weren’t catering to people with children. They got rejected a lot and when they finally found an apartment in Kitchener, it was way more expensive than market price. Then, of course, there were other issues. They didn't realize they could apply for child benefits, nor did they know what a school district meant. They had absolutely no idea how important having a family doctor was. So, yes, their first few years in Canada were not easy. Services to help immigrants are scattered and hard to navigate, especially for those new to the language, culture and environment. Our research proves that most immigrants struggle with settling in. And this is not just their problem, it’s ours as well.

ABOUT IMMIGSTATION

Research studies focusing on tax filings show that an abnormally high number of residents left the country in 2019. The onward migration rate increased to 1.18 percent, 31 percent higher than the average (Thanthong-Knight, 2023). Why do people leave? Research points to multiple factors, including the housing crisis, the healthcare system, inflation and lack of employment opportunities. But those are temporary problems that have solutions sooner or later. Policies change, rents and mortgage rates will decrease, and job demands will increase. So why do immigrants leave Canada? The reason is they don’t feel at home.
Onward migration occurs in the first ten years after arrival, with most departures occurring in years four to seven (ICC, 2023). This suggests that positive experiences are critical to the retention of immigrants in Canada. Leaving your home country cannot be equated to hiring a moving company and transporting furniture. There is a considerable change involved, both in culture and economic stature. Our clients chose to move to Canada. We aim to make them stay.
