Healthcare

You must be a resident of the province or territory where you are applying. Each province or territory has specific residency requirements. Citizenship: Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and some temporary residents (e.g., certain work or study permit holders) are generally eligible. 

Typically, you will need to provide:   

• Proof of identity (e.g., driver’s license, passport) 

• Proof of residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement) 

• Proof of citizenship or immigration status (e.g., birth certificate, permanent resident card)   Additional documents as required by the province or territory (e.g., work or study permits for temporary residents)  

Provincial and territorial governments provide publicly funded healthcare services, covering many medical expenses including hospital and physician services. Each province and territory has its own process for applying for a healthcare card (wait time up to 3 months so consider getting private insurance during that time). The card will include your personal health number, which you will use when accessing healthcare services. If you move to a different province or territory, or if your status changes (e.g., becoming a permanent resident), you must update or renew your healthcare card accordingly.
