The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) has been very successful with the number of workers nearly doubling in five years. However, due to the strain on resources and rising unemployment, Canada has implemented important changes to this Program in 2024. These updates affect both employers and new immigrants looking to secure temporary work in Canada. Below are the key changes:

1. Cap on Low-Wage Workers Starting in 2024, employers can now hire only 10% of their workforce as low-wage temporary foreign workers. Critical sectors like healthcare and construction may allow up to 20% of foreign hires.

 2. Reduced Validity of Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) The LMIA approval will be limited to a work duration of one year. Previously it was two years.

3. Increased Focus on Domestic Recruitment Employers are now required to make more significant efforts to hire Canadian workers, including young workers, newcomers and asylum seekers with valid work permits, before hiring foreign workers.
